Back to School Trends That’ll Rock Your Fashion Style!

September is just around and the corner. And students everywhere know what that means. Whether you’re a teacher’s pet or a back row slacker, there’s no avoiding the first day of school. Teenagers, and those in their early 20’s who are in search of a fashion identity for 2012 to 2013 are scouring the malls for the latest trends, so they can put together fashion looks that have turned out to be as eclectic and dynamic as the 80’s and 90’s fashion styles. Yes, we’re not talking of a single era here. We’re talking of multiple eras forecast to prowl the school campus and alleys.

The Grunge Look has made an unapologetic comeback for the school year. But instead of striving to be as unfashionable as ever in the tradition of grunge fashion, grunge has undergone a fashion savvy revolution. The grunge staples are still what marks the anti-fashion look. But the boxy silhouettes have given way to soft, shapely versions that give the wearer a leaner frame. Plus, the mix of ‘nice’ and ‘tough’ are combined in such a seamless way, you can’t see where ‘nice’ starts and ‘tough’ ends.

  • Marc Jacobs transforms the relaxed silhouette of grunge, mixes the plaid with earth tones, and uses lux fabric to give the look a polished attitude despite the grunge undertones.

  • So what’s the average-woman-on-the-street’s fashion take on ‘grunge and plaid?’ She likes the plaid shirt more tailored and eschews the large lumberjack plaid that would have made her look as squat as her 1990’s predecessor. Instead of baggy pants, she slips on black leggings and tucks them into her well-scrubbed Doc Martens. It’s an urban hip look for the student who’s too busy running to classes in university corridors.

  • Skinnier than skinny jeans which are especially tight at the ankles are being grabbed off the racks in malls everywhere by students determined to make this 80’s style their fashion uniform for school year 2012 – 2013. Some prefer these jeans in neutral colors, even non-colors like black and white. But all are worn with relaxed tops that could be in solid colors or printed designs. These loose shirts can even be belted or sashed for subtle waist definition. For a leaner and longer look, tough booties in different styles and colors can up your fashion ante and give you a punkish edge that’s not too ‘dark.’ Or you can choose to wear classic pumps to give the skinny jean look a different dimension.

Leather skinny jeans give you a rocker vibe that’s on the edge of hip. Worn with a form fitting long tee, and a jacket heavily embellished at the shoulders and cuffs in typical 80’s fashion, the look is distressed yet ultra-stylish!

  • Students channel the 80’s look with tighter than tight skinny jeans paired with colorful pops of color on their tops. Classic pumps or heeled mary jane shoes are a girlish addition to the strong look.

  • For those who don’t know what Aztec prints are; these prints were once worn by the Aztec people who occupied a large part of Southern Mexico. These prints were produced by knitting multi-colored threads in large looms. The resulting geometric prints were awash in color, and their uniqueness and beauty survive to this very day. To further enlighten you on what Aztec prints are all about, take a look at this Aztec print swath.

  • This Aztec print dress with bag will add festivity back in your life. The gambol of prints and the pleated silhouette give this look a youthful vibe and dose of vibrant color.

  • Jessica Alba mixes her prints with her Aztec print jacket and polka dot top. Match a color from one print with another so your multi-print look won’t look busy.

  • Sleek mini dresses or soft flowing dresses are getting an attitude change for back to school fashion. Their feminine silhouette is paired off with tough booties for that casually thrown together fashion perspective. This September, looking too put together is a no-no. Why think too much about fashion when you know that there’s a lot more to accomplish in terms of marks, homework, and dreaded papers! At least that’s what you’d like the entire student body to think.

Down fashion runways sashayed sleek mini dresses which contrasted with demi boots. It was a slick mix of streamlined and tough. Feminine looks had a tough patina that gave them a stand-out vibe.

  • The contrast of tough yet feminine will be evident among female students this coming fall. Floral mini dresses will benefit from a dose of masculine with feet in warm socks being pushed into lace-up boots.

In school year 2012 to 2013, it will be all about contrast: soft and tough, pretty and masculine, colorful and light or dark. Looks will have a definite streak of toughness running through them. What we can say is: enjoy the contrast!

It takes a certain intelligence to understand what trends and style would suit your fashion identity. And fashion identity is achieved only by someone who knows herself well. If we go by the Socratic principle that values knowing yourself, then we can say that a woman who dresses well and appropriately for her age and any occasion has her head firmly on her shoulders.
