Icy Blue Eye Shadow

The application of eye shadow has been used for many centuries. It is widely known that the practice and process of makeup application started in Rome where they applied Kohl to line and enhance their eyes. In Egypt, Cleopatra is an ideal example of how make-up enhanced natural beauty. During her time, green and blue eye shadows were introduced. But at that time only the average and the well-heeled can afford to shop for cosmetics.

Flashback to the 80’s where women had the flashiest and brightest make-up! It was an era of color with stars like Cindy Lauper, Kylie Minogue and Madonna piled on a lot of makeup. Blue eye shadow is always closely associated to the 80’s. Bright blue hues were always seen on an 80’s baby. Now moving forward to our generation where the motto in make-up application is “less is more,” teens and even adults are apprehensive about having dramatic eye make-up. The media dictates rules and guidelines on what an “it” girl should be. They forecast trends and sometimes I find it a bit too much. If everyone looks the same, fashion and makeup would be supremely boring.

For example, who says blue eye shadow looks wild? It’s about being comfortable in your own skin for it to look astonishing on you. There are different tints and categories of blue and it totals to 58 shades. The common colors are baby blue, blue, blue-green, cerulean, electric blue, indigo (shocked?), navy blue, periwinkle, royal blue, sapphire, teal, and turquoise. Each shade may or may not complement different eye colors and skin tones so you have to know the basics. If you happen to have blue eyes, you should veer from using blue eyeshadow, no matter what kind of blue it is, since it will not bring out the best color of your eyes. Blue will only look good on people with grey and brown eyes. So what happens if you don’t have gray brown eyes? Again, you have the option to fake it if you are really itching to wear blue eye shadow, wear contact lenses. Simple. It is the easiest solution to your dilemma. If by chance you don’t have enough time to buy contact lenses then you can blend the blue eye shadow with other colors, like pink, and black.

Remember Michelle Phan’s makeup tutorial on Moonlight Seduction? Where blue eye shadow is the highlight and mixed with pink, black, and other colors? It looks impeccable on the wearer. The finished eye make-up showed a hint of purple and blue.

Now for those with brown or gray eyes, let Katy Perry be your guide. She has gray eyes, and icy blue just makes her look fresh, playful, and young.

Remember, always experiment with your looks. It’s all a matter of trial and error. And lastly, have fun with it. You deserve to look at your whimsical prettiest!
