Neon Looks Are Going Brighter

I never liked the ‘80s fashion. As a kid, I watched Madonna and Cindy Lauper strut their stuff in everything neon – neon shoes, neon make-up, neon clothes – but never really liked the look. It’s like they’d taken a cue from Rainbow Bright or something. Then, came the ‘90s – the grunge era and I was among the lucky teens who listened to the likes of Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. And gladly, it was the time when neons finally disappeared.

But fast forward to the present, the year 2012, and I see neon… again. Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj perfectly embody neon fashion. Even their hair color and wigs are neon for chrissakes! Lady Gaga’s doing the same. Even J.Lo’s looking like she’s going to be hung somewhere in Vegas or something. All this splash of bright neon colors is making me cringe, but what can I say? Neon fashion’s definitely back. And it’s come full circle. I just never thought it’d be that quick.
If you like neon more than I do then you’re in luck because apparently, neon’s hot. Now’s your chance to be bold in your color choice, mixing and matching hues that I never in a million years thought possible. But don’t let the skeptic in me ruin all of the fun. This year, you can wear as many neon colors as you like. But as in any fashion trend, be careful not to overdo it, because you’re going to end up looking like a walking street sign.
For you who dig the neon trend, here are a few tips:
Do color blocking. Neon color blocking will definitely make you standout in the crowd not just because you’ve decided you want more than one neon color in your outfit. It’s also because color blocking is one “super-trend”. Mix and match your favorite neon hues with color blocked dresses, bags, jewelry, and shoes.
Shine with bright neon dresses. As if the pop of color from the red carpet isn’t enough, celebs attend Hollywood events and premieres in bright neon dresses. Take your cue from the Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence when she wore a bright pink gown. Personally, I think she did a great job when she put that black bow belt around her waist. It cuts the overwhelming bright pink. That high slit does the trick too.
Abigail Breslin could really learn something from Jennifer Lawrence. I mean, the neon green dress and earrings are too much, aren’t they? Her dress catches all the light coming from the flash of the camera so all that’s seen is her dress. It’s sad because it takes the attention away from her pretty face and well, those fab shoes.
Be ecstatic in electric hues. I think Vanessa Hudgens looked great in this neon orange dress. Her hair and make-up just right and her jewelry divine. The accessories complement well with the dress. The only thing that I wish for her is a little bit of height. But hey, despite her petite form, this girl can still rock that orange dress, and not everyone can do that.
Again, not everybody can pull of a bright neon dress, specifically a bright turquoise dress like Heidi Klum did when she wore this va-va-voom turquoise number in the amfAR’s Inspiration Gala. The dress did her body justice as it strategically showed off her sexy assets, especially that gorgeous back and those long legs.
Now don’t feel down if you don’t look like Heidi Klum, because you can still add some bright turquoise in your ensemble through these cute wedge shoes from Tory Burch, or this Jaida So In Fashion turquoise bag. For someone who doesn’t like that much color in her outfit, I can definitely see myself using these.
Be the envy of others with a lime green dress. J.Lo did a wonderful job with this curve-hugging lime green dress. The look was a success because, well, aside from that sexy bod, J.Lo had the right hair, make-up, and accessories. Surprisingly, I don’t mind the pink pumps. She just carried them so well. I’m not too sure if I can say the same with Lady Gaga over here, who not only hid her curves with this sad dress, but she also managed to single-handedly ruin her look with those ridiculous glasses and that I-don’t-know-what-to-do-with-myself-anymore hairstyle. But, knowing Gaga, I think I forgive her.
I must say, I got a little bit dizzy after seeing all these neon looks. But, whether I like it or not, neon is definitely back. I just hope that the trend dies down soon because honestly, there are enough neon lights out in the street and I don’t think I need to see them on people. Color’s good, but not that bright please!
