Peplum Makes a Comeback!

Women loved the hourglass definition that peplum gave their silhouette during the Elizabethan era. And if you could travel back in a time machine you’d definitely see well-heeled royalty wearing gowns accented by peplum. But peplum’s reign over womanhood didn’t end there. It would pop in and out of women’s fashion through different decades in different forms.

In 2012, you don’t need a time machine to see different peplum styles, some of which, are a throwback to different eras. Celebrities (and even royalty) are loving the 2012 peplum fashion trend because that little flare of fabric is the fastest way to lend any cocktail party outfit a big dose of elegance. In fact, designers have always kept a “peplum” card up their sleeves, and this year, big name designers from Givenchy to Valentino are revealing their peplum cards on runways in major fashion capitals.

And celebrities are snapping up the trend, wearing the peplum on tops, jackets, dresses, evening gowns, and even outfits with shorts. How’s that for a major peplum comeback?

When it comes to the Royal Women of the House of Windsor however, peplum has been a fashion staple that dates back to the 1500’s. The Duchess of Cambridge bows to the fashion tradition in peplum jackets and dresses that are understated yet stylish and thoroughly modern.

It takes a certain intelligence to understand what trends and style would suit your fashion identity. And fashion identity is achieved only by someone who knows herself well. If we go by the Socratic principle that values knowing yourself, then we can say that a woman who dresses well and appropriately for her age and any occasion has her head firmly on her shoulders.
