Summer Trends: Sunglasses

Written by Pinky Davo on Friday, 27 April 2012. Posted in Sexy Streets, Fashion

Our eyes need protection from the harsh rays of the sun in summer. Or in a lot of instances, they also camouflage bleary eyes and eye-bags fresh from a night of partying. But they do more than just protect eyes and cover up less-than-desirable peepers. They can also be an astute reflection of your personal style. In fact, many celebrities are known for signature sunglasses look, and their sunglasses shapes have become iconic.

When you say Jackie O glasses, we usually think oversized sunglasses almost covering the cheeks and brows. It’s the perfect cover up for celebrities who want to hide their disdain of paparazzi but know they need the publicity.

  • Beyonce, in a sexy one piece during a family vacation at St. Bart’s, protects her eyes with Jackie O shades. If it was good enough for the deceased First Lady, it’s good enough for the most beautiful woman in the world!

  • The rock greats like John Lennon and Janis Joplin were keen on this mod style in the 70’s. This was a way to distinguish themselves as rock artists who rebelled against the establishment, but in a style that was ironically named Ben Franklin or Granny Glasses. It was a short-lived fad in the 70’s but thanks to celebrities like Mary-Kate Olsen; they’re making a strong comeback.

Some stylistas have deemed these granny glasses “ugly”. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Just because you’re in your 20’s, you think you’ve seen the last of those heart-shaped or star-shaped sunglasses. Madonna, the original Material Girl is in her 50’s yet that doesn’t prevent her from donning these quirkily shaped glasses.Heart-shaped sunglasses and corded muscular arms? What a striking combination!

  • Cat Eye Sunglasses were popularized by Audrey Hepburn in the classic cult movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. The shape of these sunglasses has been attractive to women of every generation. The demand for it may have weakened on some years, but you can always buy a pair of these flatteringly shaped sunglasses when you want to. Our grannies would have bought the ones with tips decorated with tiny rhinestones in interesting details. If you think that the granny style is outré, you’d be surprised to find that the rhinestone studded cat’s eye sunnies are suddenly in great demand, and designers are getting their versions out as fast as they can!

It takes a certain intelligence to understand what trends and style would suit your fashion identity. And fashion identity is achieved only by someone who knows herself well. If we go by the Socratic principle that values knowing yourself, then we can say that a woman who dresses well and appropriately for her age and any occasion has her head firmly on her shoulders.
