The Most Stylish Female Olympic Athletes

When you talk of the Olympics, fashion usually takes a backseat. Understandably, ‘The Olympics’ is all about uniforms. Though the standard Olympic uniform doesn’t sacrifice clean lines and silhouette, the resulting uniforms, save for the tennis athletes’ own get ups, is anything but fashion forward. In fact, Olympic uniforms, though well-cut and sturdy, tend to lean towards the bland. So we don’t really judge most athletes on their courtside garb. We make our judgments based on their fashion off the Olympic courts. You are free to agree or disagree with us. As the Olympics reaches fever pitch, here are the most stylish Olympic athletes, in our opinion.
- Serena Williams is a tennis pro who’s also into fashion. And if her forehand on the court can cause her opponent to quake in her shoes, her fashion lobs often set the fashion world on the edge of chic. Her tastes in fashion are marked by classic lines and upscale silhouettes. When she steps out to face any kind of limelight especially when it is off the tennis court, you can be sure to turn the pages of a glossy to see her buff body encased in a slinky number with a startling infusion of color. Ms. Serena likes her ‘blacks’ but also loves a profusion of different shades. So unafraid of color and different styles is she. She slips on a hot mustard sheath with a sheer sweetheart neckline and vintage body conscious fit for the Wimbledon Dinner. A box clutch and pumps revealing just a hint of toe cleavage wrap up the outfit.

Ranked #3 in the list of top tennis players worldwide, it is not only the winning figures and her aggressive tennis stance that catches the attention of the public. Her blonde, leggy good looks also keep her in the spotlight. In fact, Harper’s Bazaar has shot her statuesque and smoldering presence against an icy ocean backdrop for one of their recent issues.
At the 2012 ESPY Awards, she slips into a pleated chiffon gown with daring cut-outs and a slit up to there by J. Mendel. The softness of the gown in the lightest shade of lavender is the perfect foil for her lithe, athletic body and Nordic good looks. It is her about face during red carpet moments that get her a generous amount of attention from her public. Because once she’s on the red carpet, if you didn’t know she was ‘Maria Sharapova, Tennis Ace,’ you’d think she was one of those up-and-coming stars of the silver screen.

After bagging the gold, Yuna became the object of adulation in her native South Korea, and the object of gushing admiration in the West. Her delicate Korean beauty, willowy and elegant form, and shining youthfulness, in combination with her intense focus and near-perfect form grabbed the attention of the media for months on end. In fact, InStyle’s fashion director Hal Rubenstein declared “This girl has everything. She has poise. She has charm. She’s perfection, absolute perfection.” And Ted Gibson of “What Not to Wear” said of Yuna’s fashion sentiments “She exudes class and elegance.” At 21 years old, to be getting such comments from hardened fashion veterans says a lot.

Despite suffering a fractured vertebra, she has expressed excitement to return to the sport, and has signified her intentions to join the 2016 Olympics. The free-spirited daughter of Mayor Michael Bloomberg (shown above) of New York has a confidence well beyond her 27 years. And her fashion sense is honed by her family’s status as well as exposure to the finer things in life.
The equestrian outfit itself is as stylish as any uniform can get. The jodhpurs, breeches, and chaps when worn together make a sleek fashion statement that has made its way to the runways as mod street wear. In the picture above, she is in a festive red dress with impeccable styling. Definitely haute couture. But if a passerby shown on TV; a tall, dark man with a glint in the eye behind his spectacles can give her outfit the thumbs up, she’s reaching a fashion demographic beyond her economic class.

For over a decade she ruled the ice, and eventually retired as the most bemedaled American figure skater. Her attention to detail and dedication to balance on the ice and off the ice into the red carpet, has also given her another type of honor, and that is to be known for ‘style.’ Being petite, she favors sleek lines and clean silhouettes. Rarely do you see her in a dress that’s too busy with details. It is this understanding and acceptance of her body that allows her to make wise fashion choices for her stint on the red carpet.
So, in anticipation of the Olympic gold, who’s your favorite female athlete? Does she have as much fashion panache as the athletes featured above?

It takes a certain intelligence to understand what trends and style would suit your fashion identity. And fashion identity is achieved only by someone who knows herself well. If we go by the Socratic principle that values knowing yourself, then we can say that a woman who dresses well and appropriately for her age and any occasion has her head firmly on her shoulders.
